Seasonal Showcase: Fall Foods

The crisp air and changing leaves mean fall is here with comforting, warm and delicious foods on the menu. Enjoy some of these flavorful fall favorites!

Chili
Easily one of America’s favorite pastime meals, chili is a fall staple that comes in various flavors, spice levels and ingredient combinations. Whether you cook chili in a saucepot or slow cooker, add beans, whole grains, extra veggies and garnishes like avocado for a heartier, nutrient-rich dish. Regardless of how you prefer this favorite fall meal – with beans or without, spicy or mild – nothing warms the body and soul quite like a bowl of chili. Try our easy Harvest Chili!

Pumpkin
Fall means it’s time for pumpkin-flavored everything. Use pumpkins to make more than just jack-o’-lanterns; add pumpkin to soups, risotto, cookies and of course, pie. And don’t throw out the seeds! Pumpkin seeds contain healthful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Toss pumpkin seeds with oil and salt on a baking sheet, and bake at 300° for about 45 minutes or until golden. Apples
Crunchy, sweet and satisfying, apples are the sweethearts of fall and great sources of fiber and vitamins A and C. There are hundreds of apple varieties, from Honeycrisp to Granny Smith to Mcintosh; the list seems endless. Each apple has a unique taste – but which varieties are best for eating raw and which are best for cooking? The general rule is tart for cooking, sweet for eating. To prevent raw cut apples from browning, dip apple slices in fruit juice – lemon, orange or pineapple will do.

Seafood
Don’t put away the fishing poles just yet! There are plenty of fish in-season this time of year, including salmon, cod, halibut, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna and tilapia. Braised, roasted and crusted seafood makes a comforting dish that’s flavorful and heart-healthy! Pick up your favorite seafood item, add seasonings and roast it on a sheet-pan with a variety of vibrant veggies for a quick, comforting meal.
